Ameren Corporation (AEE - Free Report) posted third-quarter 2016 earnings from continuing operations of $1.52 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.38 by 10.1%. Earnings also increased 7.8% year over year.
The bottom-line improvement was primarily driven by higher retail electric sales to residential and commercial customers as a result of above-average temperatures in its service territories. Ameren’s total electricity sales in the reported quarter inched up 0.3% to 21,398 million kilowatt hours (kWh) from 21,324 million kWh in the prior-year quarter. Gas volumes were up 7.4% to 29 million dekatherms from 27 million dekatherms in the prior-year quarter.
Total operating expenses in the third quarter were $1,168 million, down 3.2% year over year.
Interest expenses were $97 million, up 11.5% from the year-ago figure.
Ameren reported cash and cash equivalents of $18 million as of Sep 30, 2016, compared with $292 million at 2015 end.
Long-term debt as of Sep 30, 2016 was $6,607 million, compared with $6,880 million as of Dec 31, 2015.
Cash from operating activities in the first nine months of 2016 was $1559 million, compared with $1,542 million in the prior-year period.
Capital expenditure in the first nine months was $1,496 million, up from $1,332 million in the year-ago period.
Guidance
Ameren raised its 2016 diluted earnings per share guidance to the range of $2.65–$2.75 from the earlier projection of $2.45–$2.65.
